Hillsong Evening College
It's been 2 months now since we've started to attend Hillsong Evening College. It's not actually formal education where you get a diploma. It offers specific courses that are helpful to your spiritual and daily life like studying the Old and New Testament, classes for new believers, leadership courses, classes for raising children, marriage courses and many more.
For Ken and I, we just wanted to get our feet wet into this kind of thing so we enrolled into the marriage course. It runs around 8 weeks, with the sessions done once a week. We didn't have much expectations with this one. Ok, honestly I had some, and some reservations as well. So come the first session, we went there a little bit too early since we went there straight from work.
After the short welcoming speech in the lobby, we got our materials like workbooks and a book, and headed to our classroom. We met our facilitators and some of the other couples that were attending the class. I thought the facilitators were the ones to teach us the course but they had a video material that they play. It is from Nicky and Sila Lee, the pioneers of The Marriage Course and also author of the The Parenting Book. The video sessions consists of talks and a time for doing the exercises on the workbook. They also give assignments to be done at home to reinforce what was learned through the material.
It has been very interesting and helpful to us as it gave us an avenue to look into our marriage. It enables us to see areas that needed to be improved, learn new communication tools, listening techniques, conflict resolutions and have a better understanding about your partner. The speakers also advocate that each married couple must have a date night wherein once a week you set time to really talk and bond even for two hours away from the busyness of daily life and routine. We have times that applying what we learned from the course seems contrived at first but with practice, I can really see a benefit to the both of us and to our marriage. Next week would be our last session. It has been a well spent 8 weeks for us to build a more solid foundation to make a good marriage even better.
