Pelicans at the Entrance
It was a holiday yesterday as we celebrated the Queen's birthday. The long weekends here are fewer and far in between compared to back home so it's really a treat to go out. So last Sunday we planned to go to the central coast on Monday. We invited our friends to join us. The drive took us around two hours and we reached the place around lunch time. There were lots of people too considering that it was a long weekend. We went to eat in this fish and chips shop. After that we strolled to the beach while exchanging a thousand and one stories. We are really blessed that we find friends wherever God brings us.
At around 3 pm we started to come back to the "feeding platform" that they created for the pelican feeding which was the highlight of this trip. I have seen pelicans being fed before in Featherdale zoo but this was different because they are not enclosed and the birds are in their natural habitat. The volunteers who do the feeding also gave some trivia about the birds and how this "attraction" came about. From what I understood, the "pelican feeding" started in the 70s when this one guy that worked in the fish and chips shop, fed the pelicans during his lunch break every day. The pelicans then developed a habit of asking him for food, so they now made the feeding official and have sponsors now that take care of the fish to feed the pelicans. It has grown into a major attraction that happens everyday rain or shine at 3:30 in the afternoon. It is also their way of taking care of the birds that are in that area as they can monitor if they have injuries or whatnot. It was really cool how the pelicans follow their instructions and how the volunteers know these birds by name. The visitors were all excited to see the show with people trying to pose near the pelicans for a good souvenir photo.
After all the frenzy has died down, we then went to the norah head light house which was around 15 minutes away. The road closes an hour after sunset so we didn't have much time there, we just went out, took some pictures and then headed to the light house itself.
Now it was time to go home. But before that, we ate some of the stuff we brought for the trip. It took two hours again going back and had stories overload with our friends. It was really great that we get the chance to do this. Between all the sightseeing and storytelling, I can't help but think how God was truly faithful to us all these years. And as we get to see all the natural beauty that this place has to offer, we are reminded that He is not only faithful but powerful and beautiful as well. We thank the Lord for this trip.
